Sections of the popular Western Reserve Skate Park in Orewa have been closed for safety reasons.
Once it was identified that the skate ramps posed a health and safety risk to users, the smaller ramp was removed and the larger half pipe fenced off - this will be removed as soon as possible.
The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board has approved funding to renew the skate park which will begin with the replacement of the larger ramp.
The project team for the renewal of the skate park includes members of the local skating fraternity, who will be involved in the design process.
Local Board Chair Julia Parfitt says the project team has held its first meeting and the initial design work is underway.
"While we understand that local skate boarders will be disappointed that the park has closed, we had to put public safety first.
"It's fortuitous that the local board has funding in hand to properly upgrade the park with durable materials and make it fit for purpose for future users."
