Police say they know the identity of a man who was hit and killed by a train in Papatoetoe this morning.
Police say the deceased man is believed to be 59-years-old.
The man is thought to have been walking along the train tracks in a northerly direction towards the Papatoetoe Railway station when he was struck by a freight train.
Northern Communications Shift Commander Inspector Tony Wakelin said the indicent was a traumatic experience for the Train driver and Victim Support has been arranged for the driver.
" There will be considerable delays to morning commuters as it will take some time to clear the scene" he said.
Auckland Transport said the southern line was closed between Otahuhu and Homai.
Passengers needed to take alternative transport and scheduled bus services were accepting all rail tickets.
