The teenager found guilty of killing a West Auckland shopkeeper will continue to have his name hidden from the public while a court considers whether to grant name suppression.
The 14-year-old boy stabbed Arun Kumar in the neck at the Railside Dairy in Henderson on June 10 last year. He was found not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter and was jailed for six years.
At a hearing before his sentencing last month, Justice Graham Lang ruled name suppression for the teenager should be lifted, but his lawyer Maria Pecotic immediately indicated she would appeal the decision.
The appeal was heard in the Court of Appeal in Wellington yesterday morning.
Justices Harrison, Wild and Miller have reserved their decision for a later date - meaning the boy cannot be named at least until their judgment is delivered.
Pecotic argued that if the boy was named, he would be publicly stigmatised.
She said it would not help him with any future rehabilitation."
