There are a number of parallels between Suburbs Community Sports Club and G J Gardner Homes Waikato, so it's a good fit that the city's largest building company is the club's new major sponsor.
G J Gardner Homes Waikato managing director Jeff de Leeuw said the business was looking for a community relationship.
"We knew of the club's successes and felt it was a good opportunity to partner up. "We're really excited about being on board."
Club manager Mike Gregan said the club has several sponsors but was looking for a major sponsor to help it to grow.
"There are always costs involved in clubs that come up," said Mike. "We meet those costs but G J Gardner's assistance will ensure we can grow the club to the next level, that we can move into the future confidently, run tournaments and modules."
Jeff said his company held a strong belief that health and fitness and wellbeing are an essential part of life.
"And the club about is about keeping kids and adults active," said Mike. "It's a good alignment."
While the club has about 600 members, that's about the number of houses G J Gardner Waikato has built in the club's northern suburbs patch.
"We lead the Waikato by over double in terms of houses built, we're the largest builder in Hamilton city. But it's not all about numbers," said Jeff. "It's about doing a good job, providing great value and then the numbers come from there. Our focus wasn't to be the biggest, but rather to deliver the best product."
"Our club is run along the same lines," said Mike. "We want to do things right, give good coaching, give good stuff back."
Jeff said the sponsorship was all about community. "It's nice to do some good and this is our patch. You don't always do things for financial return, but rather just because it's the right thing to do by the community."
The club turns 65 next year. It has the city's largest number of registered junior rugby players. As well, it has senior rugby, senior netball and touch teams.
