James Tito, Matariki Whatarau, Maaka Pohatu and Francis Kora know a thing or two about classic Maori showbands.
Their group, the Modern Maori Quartet, will be performing at the Hamilton Gardens Arts festival later this month.
The show celebrates a very special era in local entertainment - when show bands toured local dance halls and Howard Morrison was as famous as Frank Sinatra. World famous in New Zealand, that is.
It helps that Modern Maori Quartet can sing.
Without exception, their voices show a fine degree of honing and a wide range of good sound "melting like golden syrup on a piece of fried bread" in the words of one reviewer.
With sublime harmonies and universal humour, Modern Maori Quartet mixes old-school charm with modern quirk, spiced with Maori culture into a highly entertaining evening of waiata, humour and pure charm. Not to be missed.
Modern Maori Quartet will perform on Saturday, February 20 at 8pm in the Rogers Rose Garden. Information and bookings at hgaf.co.nz/events/music/modern-maori-quartet.
We have three double passes to give away to the Quartet's performance. To be in to win, email your name, address and daytime telephone number to hamiltonnews@nzme.co.nz by 4pm, Wednesday, February 10.
