The dissolving remnants of Cyclone Debbie which ravaged parts of Northern Queensland earlier this week may affect Hawke's Bay's weather next week.
A Weatherwatch forecaster said while the merging of the cyclone remnants off the Tasman and a cold front edging up the South Island early next week would not be a storm it could become "interesting".
"There appears to be a bit of a sub-tropical vacuum left behind after Debbie - next week we see sub-tropical air sinking all around the North Island."
Areas to the north which were affected by heavy flooding earlier this month may see a return of heavy tropical rains, while rain easing to showers is expected to pass over Hawke's Bay from next Monday through to Thursday.
However, the unpredictability of weather systems recently has led to meteorologists taking a cautious approach at this stage.
"It's too far out to know if these sub-tropical downpours are going to cause problems in the North Island next week but it is one to monitor and we will be focusing on this set-up closely."
The low pressure system which has brought the autumn rains to the region over the past few days is forecast to weaken and move south, and while Waikato and the Bay of Plenty took heavy thundery falls, severe rain watches for Gisborne and Hawke's Bay had been lifted by 10am on Wednesday.
Napier had been forecast to get the heaviest falls with about 11mm overnight and into the late morning - before the return of the sun in the late afternoon.
From Thursday things are looking good through until the weekend for the region and warm temperatures are set to continue into early next week as the tropical airs flow down.
Humidity in Napier on Wednesday was registered at 98 per cent.
Friday's forecast for the twin cities is for fine and sunny weather and a high of 24C with sunshine also forecast for Saturday and Sunday with temperatures peaking at 26C.
The start of next week however will see a return of the low pressure systems, merged with the remains of the cyclone, with rain and easterlies set to dominate through until Wednesday, with rain easing off to showers for Thursday and Friday.
Forecasters had not yet made a call on Saturday when the close to sold-out Dixie Chicks Mission Concert will take place.
