A man died yesterday following a crash on State Highway 5 near the Te Haroto summit about 4.15pm.
Police said it appeared the man's motorcycle left the road and hit a fence, although no further information was available.
A witness said the scene was attended by police, ambulance, fire and helicopter emergency services and at the time the New Zealand Transport Agency issued a road hazard caution to advise motorists to expect delays.
The fatal crash comes less than a week after 59-year-old Steven Charles Ward, of Hastings, was killed alongside another motorcylist after their bikes collided and one hit a tanker on State Highway 1 near Tokoroa on Friday.
One of the men was overtaking the tanker when the bikes collided, throwing one of them into the tanker's path.
Both men died at the scene.
The serious crash unit is investigating yesterday's fatal crash and police are in the process of notifying next of kin.
