Police have abandoned their search for a person who was hit by a train in Auckland tonight - but who ran away afterwards.
A train driver reported the incident, that happened at the Orakei station, to emergency services about 6.30pm, said Police Northern Communications Shift Inspector Tony Wakelin.
"A male Caucasian in his 20s was on the track when he was hit.
"He's got hit and run off."
Mr Wakelin said the search was abandoned after police dogs and personnel were unable to find him.
"There were shoe marks on the train so it did strike him, he is very lucky he wasn't hit and dragged under the train."
He said the man had jumped a fence and ran across the tracks in front of the train before he was hit.
"It does seem to be a very minor clip if he was able to run away."
"This was a dangerous and foolish act and the young man is very lucky not to have been killed."
