Police have suspended their search for a man believed missing in the Waikato River.
The police diver squad arrived in Taupo yesterday and, with Land Search and Rescue, carried out a search of the river after a man was seen swimming in the natural hot pools at Spa Park before swimming out into the main flow of the Waikato River on Saturday night.
Witnesses told police they did not see the man get back onto land, but Bay of Plenty police Senior Sergeant Mike Membrey told the Herald this morning they had suspended the search until they received a missing person's report.
"We don't know if the person got out or what, so we have suspended the search. He could have got out quite easily and gone home, we don't know."
Searchers, including the Greenlea Rescue Helicopter and Coastguard Lake Taupo, searched until 1am Sunday.
Anyone with information should call 111 and ask for police.
The natural hot pool at Spa Park is where the Otumuheke Stream flows into the Waikato River, and is a popular attraction.
About 20 people were at the pools when the man disappeared.
