Goodbye winter - weather analysts say October is set to bring with it possible record-breaking temperatures close to 30C.
Daytime heat records may be broken for New Zealand as air flows come in from the tropics and Australia's desert, WeatherWatch said.
"We may be looking at temperatures closer to 30C soon in eastern areas as we get air from Australia's and interior and get that warm air in a strong nor'wester," the forecaster said.
"Daytime heat records may be broken."
However, MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said such high temperatures were not expected in the next week or so, and it was difficult to predict day to day temperatures further out than that.
"This is on average over the whole month," she said. "Obviously you could still get colder days and warmers days."
MetService is predicting a wetter than usual October for most of the country, and average to above average temperatures for all regions.
