A person crossing the Harbour Bridge told the Herald he had seen multiple crashes on SH1 near the bridge, and in both directions. One of these was a three-vehicle crash in Mt Wellington around 11.30am northbound on the southern motorway. Two lanes were blocked but were cleared within an hour.

Wellington had their share of the long-weekend chaos when a vehicle hit the centre barrier around 1pm today reducing SH1 northbound motorists down to a single lane. The crash was cleared by 2pm but congestion took some time to ease.

However, NZTA Wellington is keeping travellers updated on increasing holiday traffic congestion via its Twitter account.
