An Auckland cyclist took a ride on the wild side this afternoon, pedalling without a helmet on along the North Western motorway.
At least 10 people called police to report that the man, in his 20s, was cycling in the bus lane of the motorway just after 4.30pm.
"He was apparently not wearing a helmet, but instead was wearing music ear phones," a police spokeswoman said.
The man was reportedly spotted near the Rosebank Rd offramp in Avondale.
A kindhearted bike user with a better understanding of the road rules managed to save the situation.
"Apparently another cyclist in the actual cycle lane told this rider to get off the road and encouraged him to jump over the barrier into the safety of the cycle lane...which he did," the spokeswoman said.
A traffic unit attended but it was not clear if police spoke with the errant rider.
