Soon, Rotorua parents who lose their tiny babies will have a chance to take them home for a short time, thanks to one mum's tribute to her baby girl.
Ashleigh French has fundraised enough money to buy two "cuddle cots", each a special cooling device that fits inside a bassinet or basket to allow families of babies who have died to take them home for a short time.
One cot will be kept at Rotorua Hospital, the other will go to Waikato Hospital.
Ms French started fundraising for the devices in February with the aim to get a cot for Rotorua by December 13, which would have been daughter Luka's third birthday.
Luka died about 20 minutes after she was born by caesarean section after reduced foetal movements.
Ms French said while it was bittersweet she knew how great the need was for the cuddle cots and had plenty of positive feedback since starting the fundraising efforts in February.
She said she wanted to give more families the chance to take their babies home to allow them special time to grieve, with some babies born too early to be embalmed.
Ms French said she was pleased to have the two cots on their way from the United Kingdom.
"It's surprised me that so many people have shown an interest. It has been amazing, people have been really receptive." The cots are expected to arrive in the next couple of months.
