Seasoned international performers Orchestra of Spheres are playing in the city tonight and the show promises to be an intoxicating mix of other-worldly sound.
The performers have been brought to the city by Rogue Stage owner, Karin Vincent, who saw them perform two years ago and couldn't wait to bring them to the city.
"In the last two years I have been promoting OOS in Rotorua, telling people over and over about this amazing, great band from Wellington.
"The Orchestra of Spheres have been making music for a while, and predominantly tour abroad. They played in all the major cities in America, plus played at the Iceland Airwaves in November 2014. That alone carries enormous credit, especially taking into account that, on the same bill that year were internationally acclaimed artists such as Hozier, The Flaming Lips, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Tiny Ruins and many more."
The Orchestra of Spheres have gained a cult-like following with audiences, playing opera houses, house parties and festivals around the globe.
Described as "celestial sponges", the band has a range of musical influences ranging from Angolan kuduro, chimes of gamelan music, jazz and dance music. Players use homemade instruments such as the biscuit tin guitar, electric bass carillon and marimba to create hypnotic beats and cosmic dance music.
Ms Vincent said she had gathered a core group of Rotorua individuals and businesses ensuring the cult band had the best support.
"Two very big components of my team are Coro Sonic Lab and Musicworks Rotorua.
"It is a tremendous honour to work with both these professional teams and together we are able to offer world class touring bands the standard of sound engineering they expect."
Two supporting bands are John Hamilton aka Juan los Bastardos and The Engine Room. One man band, Hide and Tallow (Horriths Ritherland) was the perfect juxtapose to the funky, electronic pop of Orchestra of Spheres, said Ms Vincent.
