A pub might not be the usual place to get educated on men's health, but a special event next weekend aims to change that.
The Big Blue Night Out next Saturday aims to raise awareness of, and money for, Blue September - the Prostate Cancer Foundation's national awareness campaign.
Our Backyard Pub owner Richard Hazeldine, who is hosting the event, said he was approached to get behind the cause and thought it was a good one.
"It's just something I'm really interested in. Men's health doesn't get a lot of focus."
Mr Hazeldine said the evening was as much about getting guys to think about their health as it was raising money.
"It's around awareness. The prostate has a bit of a stigma as an old man's disease."
He said the pub was a comfortable environment.
"After people have had a couple, they are a lot more comfortable talking about it."
While it was aimed at men's health, he said the event wasn't just for the blokes.
Fellow organiser Sam Milner, Cory's Electrical branch manager, said last year they raised about $1300 but were hoping for more this time around.
"This year, we are a bit more organised."
Items set to go under the hammer at auction include a guitar, a signed Bay of Plenty rugby jersey, and a package including some labour and equipment from Sefton Electrical.
Cory's Electrical are a major supporter of Blue September.
-Tickets are $10 if bought before September 11, or $15 from the door and are available at Our Backyard Pub. on Eruera St. All ticket and auction proceeds go to Blue September.
