Golden girl Valerie Adams says her new fiance is her rock as she juggles wedding planning with preparations for a hoped-for third successive gold at the upcoming Rio Games. The two-time Olympic gold medallist went public about her engagement to Gabriel Price last weekend. They have been dating for two years.
In an exclusive interview with the Herald on Sunday, Adams said the couple made the perfect pair.
"He's the one for me," she said. "He's patient and quiet, whereas I'm out there - opposites attract.
"He's a rock, and it's great to have someone I can turn to just outside my team. It's good to have that balance because he's so laid-back and chilled. It makes my life easier. He's got the brains, I've got the muscle. It's a great combination."
So who would win an arm wrestle?
"That's not what you measure relationships on but he knows I can beat him," she laughed.
The engagement was announced via social media last weekend, when Adams posted a picture on Twitter of the loved-up pair and her diamond ring, and the message: "This happened a week ago. #eternal life".
Price also tweeted: "Well, single life. It's been real. But I'm peace'n out y'all. #shesaidYASSSS".
The messages were widely liked and retweeted. Adams' manager Nick Cowan posted: "Fantastic Guys, awesome and so exciting, so happy for you both, enjoy the moment!!"
