An attempted-murder charge has been laid after a man was shot in the jaw in Levin.
The 35-year-old local man was inside a house on Tuesday when two cars carrying several people drove up and a confrontation took place on the front lawn. Shots were fired.
A 25-year-old Levin man has been arrested for assault with a weapon and demanding with menace, charges unconnected to the shooting.
But a police spokeswoman said the man was later charged with attempted murder and aggravated robbery in relation to the shooting.
He has been remanded in custody awaiting a court appearance.
Senior Sergeant Rob Duindam said the event that led to the first two charges appeared to be connected with the shooting. The case was not gang-related.
He said police had recovered one of three cars they were looking for. It had been stolen.
A bullet, likely to be from a .22, had been removed from the jaw of the injured man, who discharged himself from hospital on Tuesday night.
Senior Sergeant Duindam said another bullet had brushed past the man's leg.
