Pakistan have taken a stranglehold on the first cricket test against New Zealand after increasing their second innings lead to 323 at lunch on the fourth day with five wickets in hand.
Resuming at 98 for three wickets, the tourists lost nightwatchman Saqlain Mushtaq immediately, but were able to march to a commanding 229 for five at the break, after innings of substance from Younis Khan and Yousuf Youhana.
Younis, who scored 52 in the first innings and a century in his previous test, continued in rich vein of form, striking nine fours and two sixes in his unbeaten 81, while Youhana looked well-organised before falling behind the wicket to James Franklin for 42.
On a portable pitch which is providing little assistance for anyone apart from the slow bowlers, New Zealand off-spinner Paul Wiseman struggled to deceive during the extended first session, and to make matters worse, the seam attack looked mostly harmless.
Wiseman, seen as the key ingredient in New Zealand's effort to end the Pakistan resistance, bowled 15 overs in the opening session but failed to take a wicket while giving up 49 runs.
