"It's not just giving those of us in Stratford the opportunity to travel, but also for people in Hawera and New Plymouth to visit friends in Stratford and enjoy our local sights and shops."
Stratford Grey Power branch president Peter Hartley says he is "really pleased" with the announcement that SuperGold Card holders can now enjoy free travel on the Hawera-New Plymouth Connector bus service during off-peak hours from November 30 onwards.
"It's been a long fight, started by our former Grey Power president John Shields, and I am really pleased our members will now benefit and enjoy the same free travel as users of other bus services elsewhere."
Chairman of the Positive Ageing Forum Roger Hignett acknowledges John Shield's role in the campaign. "His hard work and sheer determination went a long way in this. John doesn't suffer fools gladly and didn't let bureaucracy get in the way of the issue."
Former chief executive officer of Stratford District Council Sue Davidson and mayor Neil Volzke were also involved says Roger. "They all saw the need for the bus service to connect the towns, and they were all involved in pointing out the inequity of not allowing free travel to SuperGold Card holders."
The Government-administered SuperGold Card is a discount and concession card for seniors and veterans in recognition of their contribution to New Zealand society. It already enables free off-peak travel on Taranaki's other commuter bus services, Citylink in New Plymouth and Southlink in south and coastal Taranaki. But there was a moratorium on new services when the Connector service began in 2014.
"There have been a few changes to the scheme and now we've won approval to include the Connector, which is fantastic news," says transport services manager for the Taranaki Regional Council Chris Clarke. The council provides the Connector, Citylink and Southlink services through contracted operators.
"The free trips apply from November 30 and the only requirements are to use the service between 9am and 3pm, and show your SuperGold Card to the driver. Otherwise you'll have to pay the full fare."
The Connector, operated by Pickering Motors, makes four return trips between Hawera and New Plymouth every weekday except public holidays. Passenger numbers have risen steadily since it started, exceeding initial expectations.
