Colin Luttrell and James Olney are a couple of friendly Wanganui seafarers who would like to socialise more with others who have maritime experience.
Mr Luttrell has lived in Wanganui for 12 years and said he was involved with a social club in Palmerston North that was well-supported and he would like to see a similar group in Wanganui.
"There was a Royal Naval Mens' Association in Wanganui years ago and in a way we are resurrecting that but this will be more inclusive. We are extending the invitation to merchant navy personnel, and of course women with maritime service are welcome as well."
Mr Luttrell said the aim is to form a naval association that offers fellowship and support to its members.
"Rather than being an adjunct to the RSA, the idea is to offer something unique to those with maritime experience.
"It is quite different to anything else and only those who have served at sea can really understand it - we live at very close quarters for weeks or months at a time."
A meeting has been scheduled at the RSA next week for interested parties to discuss plans for the group.
"We will work out a regular meeting time that suits group members and come up with ideas for what we want to do and if anyone needs help.
"The idea is not to have it too formal or invent a lot of rules - it is really about providing social support and friendship for those who want it."
Interested parties can attend the Meeting at Wanganui RSA on Friday at 5pm or call Mr Luttrell 343 1744.
