SPCA Wanganui is on the up-and-up with the city's newest op shop due to open at 63 Victoria Ave on March 17.
The op shop will not only benefit lost, abandoned, and abused animals but also people looking for bargains on second-hand clothes and other items.
The shop will generate much-needed funds that will support the Wanganui SPCA inspectorate and animal centre.
"We're very pleased to open this new op shop in the heart of Wanganui," Ric Odom, chief executive of the Royal New Zealand SPCA, told the Chronicle yesterday.
"Not only will it help our Wanganui branch with funding but we hope it will also raise the SPCA's profile in the community and provide another way for us to reach out and help keep local animals safe."
The organisation was struggling as an affiliated society and asked the national body for help at the end of last year, which prompted a flood of offers of support from the community.
Acting Wanganui centre manager Shannon Langridge said the op shop will provide a new way for the community to get involved with the SPCA.
"People who are unable to volunteer at the SPCA Centre will now be able to volunteer at the op shop instead.
"There is now a Facebook page and a website thanks to volunteer help from Nigel Morris of Kiwiweb - it has been so good to see the number of willing volunteers and the range of help they are able to offer."
Donations of goods, including second-hand clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac will be gratefully accepted at the shop.
