Emergency services were called out to Westmere on Tuesday night when a dog wandered on to the road and was hit by a car.
"I'm not sure if the dog was wandering or going for a walk," a firefighter from the red watch said.
"That was the end of the dog."
The driver of the car was attended by St John paramedics but did not need to be transported to hospital, St John duty manager Trudy Taylor confirmed.
The crash happened on State Highway Three, near Blueskin Rd, at 10pm. The car involved was still on the side of the road yesterday morning.
