Gonville School students are delighted their pet guinea pigs have been returned after someone stole them at the weekend.
The three guinea pigs - Diego, Pip and Boots - live in a hutch on school property and are cared for by the students during the week and staff at weekends.
A staff member who went to feed and check on them on Sunday found the pen had been kicked in and the guinea pigs were gone.
"We didn't feel really happy," 9-year-old student Ethan Tudor said.
Deputy principal Yvette Moorhouse said the children were "heartbroken" when they arrived at school yesterday and found out what had happened.
"They were really upset ... in disbelief, really, that somebody could do that."
News of the theft spread online when parents began sharing the news on Facebook, and the school received a call from someone around lunchtime yesterday saying they'd found the three guinea pigs in a box on the front doorstep.
The children and staff were then reunited with their pets.
"The kids just went crazy with excitement," Mrs Moorhouse said. "That was the end of maths - it was abandoned. It was guinea pig love time."
Ethan said he was "really excited" when the guinea pigs were returned.
"We just kept petting them and wouldn't let them go."
Principal Greg Elgar said they'd had "quite a lot of people" ring the school and offer them new guinea pigs before the stolen ones were found.
"It's really good to see that," he said.
The children looked after the guinea pigs as well as a pig and a cat to help teach them about caring and working together, Mrs Moorhouse said. "All the kids carry them around and love them to pieces," she said.
The pen was being repaired yesterday afternoon.
