It's the little things that count for farmers during flood recovery. Little things like getting help to restore wiped-out fencing.
About 3000 posts from Hawke's Bay vineyards have been trucked to the region to help farmers repair the damage caused by June's flooding.
The posts, which get broken during vineyard harvesting, are perfect for paddock fencing.
The transfer was organised by Ruapehu-Wanganui Rural Support Trust coordinator Lyn Neeson, supported by Rabobank and transported to Wanganui by Grange Transport.
"At the moment we've sent 1000 up to the Waitotara Valley. Obviously if they need more we'll try and source some," Rural Support Trust agricultural recovery facilitator Brian Doughty said.
Mr Doughty said there would be three drop-off points up the Waitotara Valley, which was one of the worst affected parts of the region. About 70 slips along the Waitotara Valley Rd cut the community off for about a month.
"It's a huge help for farmers," Mr Doughty said. "All the little things make big things. It's bloody fantastic what they've done. It gives them a bit of a light at the end of the tunnel. It helps with trying to get everything back together. The thing is, you need to be able to keep your stock on the bloody paddock."
Mr Doughty said the damage from the flooding was worse up the valley than in 2004 because the silt and mud was not drying out. "I'd say it'd be three to five years for farmers to get back to where they were before."
