Fordell School teams excelled at the recent Wanganui Mathex competitions and principal Phil Walker says he is delighted with their success and with the effectiveness of the school's maths programme.
Teams at the competition had 30 minutes to answer 20 questions and the Fordell Year 6 team "stopped the clock" at 15 minutes 50 seconds and the Year 8 team completed the questions in 23 minutes.
"There is no doubt that these students have a passion and talent for maths. They also love competition and display the same determination and will to win in the classroom and on the sports field."
Mr Walker said the school supports their talents by streaming four classes into five maths groups. "It means that five teachers are working with a group of learners of similar abilities, teaching is focused and the learning needs of the students are being met.
"We are also very lucky to also have David Reddish leading our senior students. David has a wealth of experience, enjoys challenging his learners and sets extremely high standards.
"The other teachers have also worked very hard with the students and for a little school, our teams did very well to win both the Year 6 and Year 8 Mathex competitions.
The teams competed against more than 130 other teams from throughout the district at the Wanganui Intermediate School hall on September 2.
