A futuristic display from Palmerston North won the Designer of the Year award at a floral arts festival in Wanganui at the weekend.
Hosted by the Wanganui Floral Arts Society, the regional competition of the Floral Arts Society of New Zealand was held over two days at Heritage House.
Floral artists from Wanganui, Palmerston North, Feilding, Marton, Bulls, Horowhenua, Woodville, Dannevirke and Taihape competed in the festival, which had a theme of "back to the future".
One of the organisers, Sandy Howard, said the beginners categories depicted old-fashioned designs; the intermediate designers, current designs; and the advanced category designers, the future of floral design.
"We had more than 60 entries, which was fantastic. We were very pleased," Mrs Howard said.
The winner of the supreme designer of the year award was Robyn Higgins from Palmerston North.
Ms Higgins will go on to represent the Manawatu region at the Floral Arts Society of New Zealand's national conference in April 2016.
Three Wanganui floral arts designer placed in their categories.
Mrs Howard said it was the first time in 13 years the festival had been held in Wanganui and it had been well-supported by the public. "We had a steady crowd of people all weekend."
