Motorists on Wanganui's rural roads could soon see their speeds restricted to 80km/h - as reported in the Chronicle last Friday.
Wanganui District Council will consider dropping the speed limit from 100kmh as part of a new speed bylaw.
We asked Chronicle Facebook readers if they agreed with the move, and here are some of their responses.
"It's not that they are dangerous roads, it's that the drivers don't know how to handle the roads. I'll drive 100km/h on roads I grew up on, but know to slow down on roads I don't. People need education not restrictions." - Hayley Sellars
"I live on Tayforth Road and the 100km/h speed limit is way too fast for the width of the road and the sheer number of residential properties that line the road. Anything to dissuade the boy racers that use Tayforth Rd and Francis Road as a race track would be great." - Jennifer Gilbertson-Small
"Good idea. It should be rolled out nation wide to cut down on fatalities." - Rick Warren
"I do 80km/h anyway, it's much safer. Most rural roads you'd be lucky to crack 100km/h, unless you have a death wish." - Ashley Fox
"Who's going to police it? Get real - put your energy and resources where they can improve the world. Just another pain in the arse for rural folk." - Lee Rennie
"It would be great for the revenue collectors - they don't have to go so far out to give you fines." - Susan Carroll
"It's about time they taught people to drive properly. Be far safer if those that can't drive walked." - Ben Brown
"It should only apply to the small narrow roads that can barely have two cars side by side. But I don't think it should be for all rural roads. Adjust your speed to the road you are on and to where your confidence stands." - Jess Greenwood
"Leave it as it is. If you don't feel safe doing the full speed that's fine - just let other cars go that do." - Dan Mumby
"Some roads maybe they should be lowered to 80km/h like the Whanganui River Road - but good luck hitting 100kmh on that road anyway. In reality common sense and better driving skills are needed, not restricted speed limits." - Thomas Williams
