Demolition has started in a project that will add several new shops to one of the main retail blocks in Whanganui's Victoria Ave.
The Wallace Development Company is demolishing the rear of the former AA building, leaving a heritage facade fronting the street. Behind the facade will be 1900 square metres of modern retail space, the company's project co-ordinator Mike McKellow said.
The overall contractor is Whanganui's W&W Construction 2010 Ltd, with demolition by Jurgens Demolition.
Engineers have designed a system to keep the facade intact while the demolition happens. Mr McKellow said it would be propped from both sides and secured as the new structure goes up.
The facade is to be strengthened and restored, with a veranda added.
Building work is to start early next year, and Mr McKellow is hoping it will be finished by mid year.
Cotton On is one of the confirmed tenants for the new stores.
