Supporters of roofing Whanganui's cycling velodrome should know next week if the project has passed its latest hurdle.
A decision on resource consent is expected to be issued by an independent resource management commissioner on February 28.
Whanganui District Council Senior Policy Planner Rachael Pull said two submissions on the resource consent application were received, one in support and one in opposition. A third submission opposing the project was later withdrawn.
A public hearing will not be required, as initially thought, she said.
"The submitter in opposition to the velodrome roof submitted that the height is too high and should be reduced to the height of the Snell Pavilion and that of the Wanganui Opera House so that the present visual landscape is retained," Ms Pull said.
"The submitter in support of the Velodrome roof submitted that this is a long term project, widely known and supported and that the proposed breaches of the roof are an accepted part of the project, given the wide community benefits associated with roofing the velodrome.
"The submitter requested that the consent is approved subject to engagement with Wanganui Cycling Club regarding the final design and timing of construction, given that the proposal indicates the removal of Wanganui Cycling Club's clubrooms."
Meanwhile the 69th River City Wheel Race was abandoned over the weekend due to bad weather.
