Semi-retired Whanganui science teacher Janis Cusack has been breeding poultry for 25 years and has got the Wanganui Poultry Club going again, on a more social level.
Members of the public are welcome to the first half hour of its meetings, where they can see pure-bred poultry and buy birds for between $25 and $35 each.
The club's April meeting on Sunday in the Riverside Community Church Hall in Mathieson St had about 50 birds for sale, including ducks.
The rejuvenated club is informal, organised by Ms Cusack, and has no committee. It begins with food and a cup of tea, and after that there is usually a speaker.
Meetings are monthly for six months of the year. During the other months some members travel to show their birds. The next meeting is not until September.
The club has about 50 members. Ms Cusack breeds Orpingtons, Silkies and Pekin bantams. She said Frizzles - cross-breeds with "feathers all over the place" - and Polish chickens with "moppy hairdos" are popular breeds at the moment.
