A loss of temper led Rhys Potaka to hit his ex-partner with a jandal.
Potaka, 31, pleaded guilty to assaulting his ex-partner when he appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Wednesday.
His lawyer Stephanie Burlace said Potaka had made a early guilty plea and it was a first offence of this nature.
Judge Philip Crayton said it was a violent act that demonstrated his loss of temper.
"Having grabbed her and dragged her you struck her with a jandal."
Potaka was sentenced to 12 months supervision.
"You should understand clearly that any violence directed towards any family member is unacceptable."
"I hope you will address the causes of your loss of temper and ensure this will not happen again."
